The aim of this study was to create and validate a Monte Carlo (MC) model of a kV
treatment unit, and to use the model to calculate and display dose distributions on
CT images for educational or clinical guidance purposes. The EGSnrc MC package was
used to model 70 kV–200 kV clinical beams with open/closed end applicators of field
sizes ranging from 2 cm circle to 20 cm square and 20 cm to 50 cm source to surface
distance (SSD). Models were validated against measured depth dose curves and profiles
at depths of 10 mm, 50 mm, and 100 mm in a watertank using a PTW MicroDiamond detector.
Simulations generally agreed to within 1% with these measurements.
