The frequency of diagnostics using ionising radiation is on the increase with the
potential for patients to attend radiology multiple times over their lifetime. Optimisation
in radiology means striking the right balance between image quality and patient radiation
exposure; it is both multi-disciplinary and multi-factorial. Reject and repeat rate
analysis (RRA) is a quality indicator in Radiology and supports the department in
optimising images in general x-ray. There is a special RRA tool on the GE Discovery
656 X-ray system that aids the team in both recording and analysing rejects and repeated
images. AAPM TG151 recommends that 8% be used as a target for overall rejected image
rate, and 10% as a threshold for investigation and possible corrective action.
